A tribute to Native American roots can be seen at the India Catalina monument, created by the sculptor Eladio Gil. According to legend, Catalina was a warrior born in neighboring Galerazamba. She was captured by Alonso de Ojeda after the riot that killed Juan de la Cosa in 1509. She was then sold into slavery in Santo Domingo, but Pedro de Heredia brought her to Cartagena as his interpreter in 1533.
