Colombia’s new flight routes are making the country easier to visit than ever. Since the end of its internal conflict, Colombia has seen international tourism surge by more than three times the global average, and more than eight times the average for the Americas, according to the World Trade Organization.

Colombia is now a top destination for adventure for overseas visitors, thanks to its astonishing natural landscapes and the sheer variety of activities that can be carried out on its terrain.

A positive change for Colombia

At least 3.2m visitors arrived in Colombia in 2017, thanks to the country’s new air routes, which was a 24.7% increase when compared to 2016. That figure increased by a whopping 46% for 2018 and looks set to increase even more, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council.

Colombia is emerging as an excellent option for foreign investment too. The improvement in its safety, compared to 2002 figures, has been key to its development and the fact it has become an increasingly attractive option for international tourism.

New air links welcome international visitors

There were 17 new international air routes in operation by the end of 2018, which means 127 international routes now connect Colombia with the world. 

Ten of these new routes connect cities other than Bogota, Colombia’s capital, including Cali, Cartagena, Santa Marta, Pereira and Medellin. One of the most significant, with excellent potential, is Avianca’s new flight between San Salvador, El Salvador, and Cartagena, on Colombia’s Caribbean coast.

A Government pledge

President Ivan Duque is determined to ensure Colombia’s tourism industry is the beating heart of its economy, with a world-beating hotel and airport infrastructure, increased air connectivity, a developed market, straightforward procedures, effective travel promotions and competitiveness.

The expansion of Colombia’s air links looks set to continue, with Latam’s Lima-Cali connection the first new route to open in 2019. 

Colombia has everything it takes to be a world class destination for adventure, backed by a world class tourism industry. All that remains is to manage the country’s comprehensive plan with consistency, and a long-term vision, and it will soon become one of the most visited countries on the planet.
