Padilla Plaza was established in Riohacha in homage to Admiral José Prudencio Padilla, who was born in the city on March 19, 1778. This military officer, who founded the Colombian Navy, became the greatest naval hero of the country after a serious of feats. He took part in the famous Battle of Trafalgar on October 21, 1805; the defense of Cartagena in 1815; and the defeat of the Royalists in Maracaibo on July 24, 1823.
