COLOMBIA
Colombia is famous for its incredible diversity and the fact it offers visitors the chance to see natural phenomena they have never seen before.
Few natural sights are as awe-inspiring as the birth of newborn baby turtles, who scurry down to the ocean and start swimming the moment they are hatched.
Majestic sea turtles climb onto the beaches of Colombia Pacific Coast and bury their eggs in the sand. Conservationists then gather and monitor the eggs, reburying them in protected areas of the beach.
Lucky visitors are often treated to the sight of these tiny creatures, no bigger than an adult human palm, hatching and following their natural instinct, which is to run straight down to the water.
Bahía Solano Colombia is one of the best places to see this happening, and there are plenty of other activities to do in this small coastal town.
El Valle is a peaceful village connected to Bahía Solano by an 18km road. Life there moves to the rhythms of the tide. When the tide comes in, it flows over a strip of sand close to the village’s hotels and down into the rivers descending from the Baudó coastal mountain range.

One of these rivers is the Valle River, which is bordered by four different species of mangrove. Visitors often choose to travel upstream on this river, by canoe and then by foot, first to the Cascadas River, which is a haven of crystal pools and waterfalls, and then to the Chadó River, to visit the huge pool it forms before it flows into the sea.
High tide is the best time for a nature walk in this area. Look out for the iraca palm tree, used to weave local hats; the famous borojó aphrodisiac fruit, used for preparing delicious drinks, and the rare labios de negra flower, which resembles a bright red mouth. One of the best ways to see these species is from the canopy itself.
Evening is the best time to visit Bahía Solano’s turtle sanctuary, where the work is undertaken to protect and preserve the species. Turtle egg-laying season lasts from September to December and turtles mostly lay their eggs at night.
Visitors also like to time their trips between August and October, when boat rides to see yubarta whales, sharks, and dolphins in their natural habitat are very popular.

Just half an hour by boat from Bahía Solano and a two-hour walk along the beach, you will find Punta Huina, a stretch of red sand with crystal-clear waters, where the sea is ideal for fishing and diving.
Playa de los Deseos is another of the most prominent beaches in Punta Huina and is an excellent place to relax or walk and explore its dark sand and majestic cliffs. The beaches of Cotudo and Becerro are also worth a visit and are the ideal spot to try free diving.
The nearby ruins of ARC Sebastián de Belalcázar are well known and have become a popular diving spot. This sunken ship survived Pearl Harbor and later became an active vessel in the Colombian Navy.
Further south, bordering the Pacific Ocean, is caleta Utría, home to the Utría National Natural Park. This refuge park is home to more than 300 different species of tropical birds and also the greatest variety of bat species in Colombia.
It is also the habitat of numerous rare and colorful frogs, including the abarco (Cariniana), the abrojo (Alternanthera), the caimito (Crysophyllum), the pojoró, mahogany (Swietenia), and the milpesos palm (Attalea).
This national park, one of the most biodiverse in Colombia, is a migratory corridor for several tropical species and is filled with wooden walkways that visitors can explore to observe wildlife on land, water, and air.
It is just 35 minutes from El Valle and is also one of the best places in the area to see humpback whales that have traveled to its warm waters to appear and give birth to their calves.
