COLOMBIA
In a region abundant with stunning destinations, the small municipality of San Carlos in Antioquia stands out. Located in the lush valley where the San Carlos River flows among jungle-crowned peaks, it’s an ideal spot for adventure sports, with nearby waterfalls, streams, and canyons.
Despite its myriad activities, San Carlos is rarely chosen by tourists, so its attractions are usually tranquil and free of crowds. Its warm climate, typical of the lower Andes, allows you to sleep outdoors and cool off in its many streams.
While offering a wide range of adventure sports like canyoning, tubing, and climbing, San Carlos is also perfect for calmer activities: birdwatching, cycling tourism, or hiking.
A scaled-down replica of the famous Piedra del Peñol, this colossal monolithic rock overlooks the municipality from the mountaintops, offering panoramic views including much of the Magdalena River valley. On a clear day, you might spot the glacier of Nevado del Ruiz.
The journey to the monolith’s summit is as impressive as the landscapes you’ll see, as you’ll traverse a dense forest filled with birdsong. The hike isn’t long but involves an 800-meter ascent, with parts of the trail fading into the thicket, so hiring a local guide is recommended.
If you love exploring waterfalls, this destination is perfect. The peaks surrounding San Carlos capture rainwater, forming waterfalls of all kinds, from roaring cascades to gentle streams feeding calm pools.
The standout is La Cascada, where a wide river pours over flat rocks, splitting into two falls before forming a popular swimming spot; La Chorrera, a group of waterfalls gliding through vegetation down the mountainside; and El Chispero, smaller in volume, forming a green pool at its base where you can swim amid the jungle. Canyoning, descending rocky surfaces with climbing ropes, is common here.

The crystal-clear waters forming waterfalls eventually settle into pools perfect for swimming. Around San Carlos, you can enjoy Charco La Quiebra, a large pool ideal for spending the day and eating; Charco Redondo, beside a tranquil river in dense forest; and Charco Negro, also called Río Tinto, named for the dark hue from fallen leaves.
This sector of the Colombian Andes is a premier sanctuary for observing over 370 bird species that inhabit or pass through during migrations.
In central San Carlos, hotel options are limited. They cater to budget and mid-range travelers but require booking in advance, especially for weekends. Rural accommodations outside the city are more convenient for those with their own vehicle.
The nearest airport is José María Córdova in Medellín, about two hours away. By land, San Carlos is three hours from central Medellín and two from Guatapé, another popular regional tourist destination.
