Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, the Katíos National Nature Park is named in honor of the indigenous Embera Katíos that inhabit the area. Its 280 square miles contain several ecosystems, including tropical rain forest, marsh, and swamp forest. This protected area is part of the Darién Gap, which is rich in water resources.
