A tale of the charm of typical animals from the Colombian Amazon

I was born in this place about 200 years ago. Although it may surprise you, I still have half my life left. I love living among the different shades of green that shine in the sunlight. This place is very tranquil and has sensational weather. The members of the indigenous tribes and animals of the Colombian Amazon who live here make me feel very special and important.

They say I am fundamental to the jungle's ecosystem. Growing up here has allowed me to learn more about nature and biodiversity. It's inevitable, as I am in the world's greatest lung.

Being closer to the sky—thanks to my height—I have been able to observe in detail everything that happens around me. I have had the opportunity to see different animals from the Colombian Amazon throughout this vast territory. From the most daring, like the small frogs with vibrant colors, to the noblest, like the sloths that are almost always in a deep sleep.

Due to certain circumstances, such as climate change, I have noticed that new species have arrived in my ecosystem. I would like to tell you more about them, as it has been incredible to share the same home and discover all they have to show.

1. The Pink Dolphin

Through my extensive roots, I have reached the depths of the water. That's how I met the animal species that reflects its tenderness even in the color of its skin: the pink dolphin. Seeing them jump, swim, and coexist is a unique experience.

These animals from the Colombian Amazon are one of the thousands of species that inhabit the world's longest and most powerful river. Their weight and size are similar to those of a human, among the tallest and most corpulent. The pink dolphin enjoys having some crabs, fish, and small turtles as part of its banquet. In addition to being very ingenious, they are extremely curious. That's why I often see them chasing boats sailing down the river.

2. Blue Lizards

Along my trunk, I have felt the tickling of some of the protagonists of my stage. They are animals from the Colombian Amazon that tend to be the most frequent, the small blue lizards. Although they are very fast, it is inevitable that you and I see them. The color of their skin is amazing, almost blending with the blue of the sky.

This animal species is usually outside during the day and is a bit timid, especially around larger animals. They relish whenever they see spiders, crickets, and other insects. Although we are polar opposites due to their tiny size, we have bonded very well.

3. Ornate Titis

As you may know, my branches are almost endless. With them, I have been able to stretch to unimaginable places in the jungle. Also, they are the favorite part of my body for the arrival of different animals from the Colombian Amazon. The ones constantly jumping between my branches and those of my relatives are the ornate titis. They are known for wearing white gloves and shoes. These jumping monkeys are equivalent in size to a newborn baby, but their weight is three times greater. I am amazed at how much they resemble humans. Not only because of their features and the affection among their members, but also because of how their group is formed: a pair and between one to two offspring.

My leaves fall occasionally to the rhythm of the wind. The weather is an essential factor for this to happen. However, they remain a part of me even when they are on the ground. Through them, I met a majestic animal that caresses the earth with its black and long fur.

4. Spectacled Bear

This species got its name from the light spots surrounding its eyes, creating a very curious shape. Yes, I am referring to the spectacled bear. It has a medium size compared to other bears, yet it is one of the largest I have seen around here. With its keen ear, it has taught me to be attentive to all the sounds in this territory, like those of the birds. Although it often prefers to be alone roaming the jungle, when it wants company, it chooses me. It loves hugging me.

My head—or the crown, as they often say—is the part of my body with which I can visualize everything that happens in this place. I can look down or towards the horizon and still find magnificent things.

5. Sword-billed Hummingbird

I constantly see different species of birds taking flight around me. But there is one in particular that has caught my attention: the sword-billed hummingbird. This hummingbird, the size of two apples, has a beak so large that it can double the length of its body. Although it seems incredible, I have verified that it is true. Its diet is sweet to the palate, as it only consumes the nectar of certain types of flowers. Although it travels a lot, Colombia is its favorite destination. Both of us feel the rhythm of this land when we remember how magnificent it is to live in this place.
