The world's lung we must enjoy

From the airplane window a few minutes from landing in Leticia you can see below a carpet of tightly packed trees staining a huge brown river as it winds through the jungle: at 6,800 kilometers it is the longest in the world. This is the view before arriving in the Amazonas, Colombia, a destination home to 212 mammal species and 195 reptile species.

The Amazonia Colombiana is an incredible place for travelers seeking intense contact with nature and to learn about some of the country's most representative cultures.

Like gigantic veins, majestic rivers run through this region, facilitating trade and travel to unparalleled places within the jungle: remote towns, resguardos, parks and natural reserves — all of this can be found in the Amazonas, Colombia.

Indigenous groups give this territory an incomparable ethnic multiplicity. Learning about their rituals, culture and beliefs, interacting with community leaders and understanding their relationship with nature is a unique experience that evokes the authentic charm of the Amazonas.

This wonderful habitat hosts as many species of fauna and flora as any other ecosystem in the world and is remarkable not only for the cultural diversity of its indigenous peoples, but for the life that originates and is nourished along the many banks of the río Amazonas, the most voluminous, wide and deep river on Earth.

If you want to learn more about Colombia's culture visit Villavicencio, the heart of the east.

What to do in Amazonas?

The nature of the Amazonas stages a show every day so visitors can see pink dolphins in the river. At the point where Colombia, Perú and Brasil meet, indigenous cultures such as the Ticunas, Huitotos and Yucunas share the jungle; animals like anteaters, pumas and deer; medicinal plants that are part of ancestral traditions and giant trees such as mahogany and cedar.

With a total of 28 resguardos, the cultural traditions of the indigenous peoples present in the department have been preserved to honor the history and charm of this ecological paradise: the Amazonas.

With more than 674 species we invite you to experience Birdwatching in Colombia, where you can see the most incredible species. Each of these animals decorates the sky with color and fills the jungle with beautiful songs that seem to tell us something very special.

For lovers of ecotourism and adventure tourism, this region of Colombia offers many activities such as tree climbing, jungle hikes, canopy, river navigation on the río Amazonas, wildlife and plant observation or embarking on a river voyage to remote and restricted places deep in the jungle.

Unique experiences

Life in the Amazonía is so different from 'civilization' that sometimes it seems like a dream to see the world's largest lotuses, the Victorias regias, resting on the calm surface of lakes. Here in the Amazon jungle at Colombia's southern tip, birdwatchers from around the world come to see some of the 674 species that live here. In this destination it's also possible to 'float' from the tree canopies.

The capital of the Colombian Amazonas is Leticia, a hospitable and comfortable city that is also an active trading center and is surrounded by roads that lead into the dense forest and to remote sites where it is possible to practice ecotourism and adventure tourism while enjoying the incredible landscapes of the Amazonas.

At the tourist pier of Leticia lies the imaginary line that divides the Amazon trapezoid into three countries: Colombia, Brasil and Perú. From there you can arrange trips to enchanting places and live unique experiences.

Handicrafts made by the natives can be purchased at the resguardos or regional fairs and stand out for their fascinating designs created with seeds, tree bark, feathers, hemp, scales of Pirarucú and other elements collected in the depths of the selva tropical amazónica.

Activities you can't miss

Seeing the largest lotuses in the Amazonas and walking the little streets of a town with no cars are some plans that make a visit to Colombia's southernmost region special.

This destination is ideal for enjoying an incredible journey: climbing 35-meter trees, sliding among their branches on a course over eighty meters to feel the force of nature; spending the night in the crown of a Ceiba and listening to the voice of the jungle and its deepest secrets by moonlight — as one of the world's lungs in the Amazonas you will find unique adventures.

Another major attraction of this destination are the natural parks that offer tourists a unique experience to observe the majesty of the Amazonas' fauna and flora. Among them are Cahuinari, Río Puré and Amacayacu, where it is possible to hike jungle trails, take water trips and enjoy birdwatching.

In addition to the national parks there are other tourist circuits such as Isla de los Micos and the municipality of Puerto Nariño, where you can observe pink dolphins, the black caiman and the Amazon's representative aquatic plant called Victoria Regia; this lotus can reach up to 1.50 meters in diameter and is considered the largest on the planet.
