La Unión is located in the northern region of the Valle department, known as "The Wine Capital of Colombia." Unlike most of the other cities in Valle, this municipality has highly diverse agriculture, as a wide variety of tropical fruits are grown in large quantities, such as grapes, papaya, passion fruit, melon, blackberry, lulo, cacao, coffee, guava, among others.

Its agricultural diversity enabled its rapid urban development, giving it a different capacity compared to other towns in Valle del Cauca, since its horticultural axis is not centered on sugar cane, which is cultivated on 80% of the department’s land.
