Voting closed, the travelers gave their opinion and the competition ended. Just as every year the best films are awarded at the big Oscar gala, the World Travel Awards arrived, where the best tourist destinations were recognized and of course Colombia shone by winning 14 of the awards.

“WTA had the privilege of recognizing the industry’s driving forces from the leading nations from the length and breadth of the Caribbean and Americas regions. As stellar examples of tourism excellence, our winners have helped us to once again raise the collective benchmark”. With these words, event chairman Graham Cooke extolled the importance of the winners and recognized the work they have done. 

The purpose of these awards is to recognize the tourism work carried out in the different cities of South America, considering things like culture, innovation, landscapes, and amenities. During the 29th ceremony the cities of Cali, Bogota, Cartagena, Medellin, and San Andres Island won awards, here are some of the prizes obtained.

 

South America's Leading Airport 2022: El Dorado Airport, Bogota

With more than 35 million travelers transiting daily through the airport, innovation, technology, airport amenities and relevance in connections, those were some of the factors considered for the choice of El Dorado International Airport as the leader in the region.  

Located in the capital city of Colombia it has 24,000m2 and had different renovations that were inaugurated during 2012 and 2017; it has 2 passenger terminals and one cargo terminal. Its name was a tribute to the indigenous people of the country and was inaugurated in 1959.

It was a convent, a hospital, a prison, a medical school and finally a luxury hotel, the Sofitel Santa Clara Hotel is synonymous with the historical memory of the city of Cartagena. This suite has 73 m2 and is inspired by the Colombian artist Enrique Grau and it is decorated with different sculptures and paintings of his authorship, as well as books with his story. The room has two levels and has a balcony overlooking the Caribbean Sea. 

 

South America's Leading Cultural City Destination 2022: Santiago de Cali

Cali is synonymous with culture in the country, its streets are full of music, art, and folklore. This city is known as the “branch of heaven,” Cali is the winner for the third time in this category that considers aspects such as hotels, transportation, gastronomy, and tourism welfare in the region. With events such as the First Cholado Festival, Cali remains in the continuous search to improve and provide merchants with elements to improve their businesses.
