Former Vice President of Colombia Francisco de Paula Santander declared the National Museum open on July 4, 1824. Its first site was the current home of the Botanical Expedition. The museum, which houses about 20,000 artifacts, antiquities, and works of art, has been located in the former Central Penitentiary of Cundinamarca building since May 2, 1948.
