COLOMBIA
Community-Based tourism in Colombia has not only allowed local communities to get involved in the development and management of tourist activities in their territories but has also generated opportunities for new beginnings. These opportunities we present to you arise from the interest of the women in each community to recover their traditions and share their native customs with the world, as an effort to generate sustainable community and natural experiences.
The geographical location of Nuquí and the warmth of its communities make it a destination you must visit at least once in your life. Sustainable tourism has become a fundamental pillar of the territory, so on this route, you will have experiences designed to teach you the best of local culture, cuisine, and nature. This initiative benefits around 40 families in the municipality, who will guide you through the ancestral traditions of Nuquí.
The plans, developed in collaboration with Ancestral Travel, are available throughout the year, including the whale season from July to October. The packages range from four to five days, where you can participate in a traditional cooking class, listen to groups of women singing alabaos (traditional funeral songs of the Afro-Pacific communities and part of the Intangible Heritage), learn about handicrafts, or share a moment of singing and dancing with the women of Arusí, among many other activities.
Ángela Gómez and Luisa Conto have spent over 10 years building Nature Colombia, a leading company in bird and amphibian watching. The tours they offer are developed in different areas of the country where the communities will be your best guides. With them, you will find routes that will show you a cultural richness of Colombia that is not immediately visible.
The birdwatching routes range from the Greater Colombian Caribbean, passing through the Coffee Cultural Landscape and the Colombian Pacific, to where the Eastern Plains meet the Amazon, along with other options. These destinations are ideal for observing hundreds of endemic species while gaining insight into the power of women throughout the country. You will be able to learn about the work of artisans, the medicinal knowledge of indigenous communities, or the transformation of products, among many other experiences.
The native inns are not just accommodations in the archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina; they are homes that open their doors for you to learn about the Raizal culture from its intimate details. Established since 1985 and under the slogan "attended by its owner," the native lodges seek to preserve, exalt, and spread the island's traditions through cultural exchange with their visitors.
One of the oldest lodges is 'Miss Trinie's,' who says that the Raizal population has long offered their homes to visitors to the island. These cozy homes that preserve their unique architecture are ideal if you want to get to know the islands like a local. You will not only experience the culture firsthand with the inhabitants and learn about Raizal traditions narrated by the lodge owners but also discover corners, aromas, and landscapes known only to those who grew up on the islands.
Medellín is an example of the power its inhabitants have to transform history and turn it into opportunities for moving forward without forgetting their past. An example of this is the Moravia neighborhood, transformed into one of the largest gardens in the country after being a landfill for years, and today is a development hub and an example for the entire community.
In partnership with Palenque Tours, community leaders guide a tour that takes you through the streets of Moravia while you learn about its history and the resilience work carried out to transform the comuna. The tour lasts approximately four hours, where you can walk through the garden where the old landfill was, feel the warmth of the neighbors, and see how urban art and music are part of the landscape.
La Comunera was born as a large agroecological laboratory for the women of Santander and surroundings to launch natural initiatives and thus grow economically. This work, promoting alternative economies, evolved over time and focused on tourism for people of all ages.
Thus, the Bio-natural Center of Community Tourism La Comunera was born, benefiting more than 35 female heads of households. At La Comunera, you can stay, enjoy day trips, take planting and harvesting courses, observe fauna and flora, hike, and meditate. The products made by the women can be purchased at the bio-natural center, where all kinds of talks are also given for those with an investigative, ecological, and sustainable spirit.
With the support of the "Agencia de Viajes Conociendo", the foundation with the same name was born, focused on supporting single mothers in Tumaco, promoting the conservation of the territory and its traditions, and showing the positive side of the area. Today, more than 30 organizations led by women, professionals in different economic lines, have consolidated 19 tourist experiences in five municipalities of the Nariño Pacific Coast.
These initiatives have managed to enhance and position Tumaco as an attractive community-base-tourism destination, with significant experiences where you can learn about and enjoy traditional food, nature, music, and ancestral traditions of this part of the Pacific Ocean. The gastronomic route and the cocoa route are two of the most appealing activities in Conociendo.co since Tumaco has some of the best cocoa in the country, so you can't leave without trying it.
Community-Based tourism represents a significant opportunity for local women's communities in Colombia to continue sharing and preserving their natural and cultural wealth. By establishing alliances and implementing training programs, these types of tourist activities will continue to grow to offer more and better services to all who want to experience unique adventures in the country.
We invite you to support, participate, and share your experiences and recommendations. Your visit contributes to the benefit of local communities and encourages others to develop their own community tourism activities. In the country of beauty, we await you to discover traditions preserved by generations of women, to bet on nature conservation, and to support local initiatives.
