The church and monastery of San Pedro Claver, formerly the Church of San Ignacio de Loyola, were built in the early 17th century by the Jesuit community. Its current name is a tribute to San Pedro Claver, a missionary who lived and died in the convent next to the church and fought for the underdog. He was called the “The Black Man’s Apostle.”
