In the middle of the descent from the Andes towards the jungle of Putumayo lies a mystical valley where ancestral traditions remain alive. There, Sibundoy brings together extraordinary nature and the cultural richness of the Colombian Massif in one place.

These fertile lands, located halfway between the modern city of Pasto and Mocoa—the gateway to the Amazon region—have always been a meeting point where the indigenous Kamëntšá and Inga communities coexist. This coexistence is the living embodiment of the traditions of the Andean peoples alongside those of the original inhabitants of the jungle.

Many communities in the Sibundoy Valley warmly welcome visitors, so you can approach them to learn in detail about the fascinating regional culture.

Attractions and Experiences

Bëtsknaté - Atun Puncha

The Kamëntšá and Inga peoples come together to celebrate what translates as the Great Day, a traditional valley festival full of color that showcases the region’s cultural exchange, coexistence, and harmony. The celebrations include music, dancing, parades, and craft exhibitions.

Sibundoy Masks

These vividly painted wooden pieces played an important role in religious rituals and, at the same time, served as a form of passive resistance by these two indigenous communities against colonization. There are still artisans in various parts of the valley whose work you can admire up close. The masks vary in size and shape and often represent animals and faces of different ethnicities with natural or expressive gestures.

In the various workshops, you will see artists implementing techniques inherited from their ancestors. You can also purchase their works directly, which are valuable keepsakes from the valley.

Birds of the Sibundoy Valley

It’s no surprise that, due to its location at the confluence of two key ecosystems, the valley is a biodiversity stronghold and, in particular, a primary bird sanctuary within the Colombian Massif. In this region, 315 species have been recorded, 18 of which are classified as vulnerable. In Vereda La Cumbre, you’ll find options for guided birdwatching excursions.

Colón Hot Springs

The small town of Colón is famous for its covered thermal pools, whose waters are said to have therapeutic properties. The same thermal source has been used by indigenous communities for many years. In addition to immersing yourself in the soothing waters, you can also enjoy mud therapy sessions and walks along jungle trails to complete your relaxation experience.
