Colombian Tourism boasts incredible places in our geography and there are always unexplored spaces that become trending due to their beauty. In this case, Chiribiquete is a natural wonder that was turned into a national park and has gained prominence because aerial tourism will soon be available to explore this enchanting place.

Considered one of the largest biodiversity hubs in the country and a UNESCO mixed heritage site, it holds the greatest number of pictographs painted by the region’s indigenous people. Many compare this rock art on the stones to the Sistine Chapel due to its majesty and the design of the rocks in the heart of the Amazon.

About Chiribiquete

Located in the northwestern end of the Amazon basin, it lies within the jungle territories of the municipalities of San José del Guaviare, Miraflores, and Calamar in Guaviare; with borders in San Vicente del Caguán, Solano, and Cartagena del Chairá in Caquetá.

It was declared a national natural park in 1989 and since its designation, new species have been discovered. Over time, it expanded to cover 4.3 million hectares. To date, it boasts records such as 2,138 documented flora species, of which 67 are endemic and 16 are exclusive to Chiribiquete.

Due to its proximity to Guaviare and Caquetá, tourists wishing to visit the area can approach the rocky formations of the stone city in the Serranía de la Lindosa and see pre-Columbian pictographs at Cerro Azul. There, you can closely experience what makes this place unique in Colombia. Plus, if you’re a fan of Colombian eco-tourism, the Las Delicias waterfall, the Black Lagoon, and natural wells will be must-visit destinations.

In 2018, the park was declared a Natural and Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Currently, Chiribiquete Natural Park does not allow tourism. Until 2019, flyovers were permitted so visitors could admire this natural wonder from above, but due to the pandemic, these aerial tours were suspended. Don’t be discouraged, though—San José del Guaviare offers a variety of tourist attractions you can visit.

How to get to San José del Guaviare?

From Bogotá, you can fly from El Dorado Airport to San José del Guaviare. Note that since 2024, flight frequency has increased, so you can now travel Monday through Friday with Satena airline.
