The Vaults are in the northern part of the walled city between the Santa Clara and Santa Catalina forts. With 47 arches and 23 domes, they were the final colonial constructions in the fortified city. They initially served as Spanish headquarters, then as a jail for Patriots during Independence and at the beginning of the Republic, and now house art galleries, bars, and souvenir shops.
