If you want to visit some of Colombia’s most tranquil beaches, you need to head north by car from Riohacha for about three hours to Cape La Vela (Cabo de La Vela). This site—where Captain Alonso de Ojeda arrived in 1499—features tourist inns, a number of which are constructed from bamboo and yotojoro (the inner wood of the yosú cactus), and can go kitesurfing or windsurfing.
